Safety & Procedures
Penn Yan sits on a ridge between two lakes, with a busy training pattern and real wildlife activity. Please review these procedures before you arrive.
Traffic Pattern
- Standard left traffic both runways; pattern altitude 1,790 ft MSL (800 AGL) for light aircraft.
- Turbine and heavy twins: 2,290 ft MSL (1,300 AGL).
- Announce position on CTAF 122.8 at 10 miles, downwind, base, final, and clear of runway.
- No straight-in approaches during flight training hours (0800–1900 local) when the pattern is active.
Noise Abatement
- Avoid overflight of the village of Penn Yan and the Keuka Lake shoreline below 2,500 ft MSL.
- Use best-rate climb to 1,500 AGL before turning crosswind.
- Voluntary quiet hours 2200–0700 local — please avoid run-ups and pattern work.
Wildlife & Terrain
- Active deer population; expect crossings near the Runway 19 threshold at dawn and dusk.
- Overfly the field before landing at night or after periods of no traffic.
- Rising terrain west of the field — plan departures and go-arounds accordingly.
Winter Operations
- Lake-effect snow can reduce visibility rapidly with little warning; check the AWOS before descent.
- Snow removal priority: Runway 1/19, then main taxiway, then ramp and hangar rows.
- Braking action reports are advisory only — expect reduced braking after freezing rain.

Dial 911 for any on-field emergency. Report unsafe operations, runway incursions, or wildlife strikes to the airport office at (315) 536-4471 so we can log and address them.
